Just across the prefectural border from Toyama where a post-fermented tea also called batabatacha is made, the town of Itoigawa in Niigata also has a folk tea that you whisk (batabata is an onomatopoeic word that means to whisk vigorously). The ingredients are completely different but makes for a complex tea with hojicha as its base.
Using more modern steeping parameters, the tea offers a toasty base flavor with a note of herbs and a strong buttery aftertaste.
