A really lighted roasted hojicha that misses the mark.
Fresh out of the package, the smell is fantastic - light, chocolatey and sweet. Not much roasted smell. The leaves look quite interesting - a combination of lightly roasted leaves and stems, giving off a mixture of yellow and dark greenish colours.
For steeping, I steeped this according to the given instructions of 5g of leaves in 200ml of 90C water for 1 min. Resteeped 3 times.
1st steep: Surprisingly light both in flavour and in colour. Colour of liquor is a mix between amber and honey yellow. As expected from the colour, flavour was rather light in roast and vegetal. Not that pleasant but drinkable. Aftertaste is rather astringent.
2nd steep: Pretty much an even lighter version of the 1st steep with added astringency. Colour of liquor remains the same.
3rd steep: Very bitter and astringent both in mouth and in aftertaste. Kind of like you're tasting bitter gourd. Undrinkable. Don't steep a 3rd time.
Overall a disappointing tea for such a beautiful tin. Expected much much more. For its price of 45g for 10USD (I got the 2016 one), you are better off getting other hojichas (Obubu dark roast, nakamura-en, etc.). The smell and colour of leaves are certainly interesting but the taste leaves much more to be desired.

This is the best hojicha I've had. It has a wonderful, crisp autumn flavor with a robust tangy strength behind it. I can't recommend it enough.
