What is SKC?
SKC stands for Shizen-no-ie Kaachan Club, a group formed by women (kaachan is a very casual way of saying mom in Japanese) living in temporary housing community called Shizen-no-ie, literally natural housing.
After the earthquake and devastating tsunami that hit the Tohoku region in March 2011, many have lost their homes. "Home" cannot simply be put as a housing facility but the true meaning of home is in the community and the bond established among those in the community.
After the earthquake and tsunami, people in the same neighborhood and community have been separated apart, living in different temporary housing facilities. For the purpose of re-forming and re-establishing the community that has come apart, women in the Tokura district of Minamisanriku-cho, Miyagi prefecture have made a place to gather together. They meet to make hand knitted products and hold knitting classes as well.
