Introduction

OISO KŌBŌ: TOSHIYUKI KOMEYA

Toshiyuki Komeya is the head artist of the Oiso Kōbō studio. The studio, Oiso Kōbō, is based in the Shonan-Oiso area of Kanagawa Prefecture. Located near the coastline of Oiso beach, he produces blue colored potteries and his representative constellation series of porcelain cups, in which the inside is covered with turquoise blue glaze. The used of blue color in his works resemble the blue sky and the deep blue ocean.

HISTORY AND RECENT ACTIVITIES

After graduating from a high school specializing in pottery and working for few years, Toshiyuki established his own studio Oiso Kōbō in 2006. Thereafter, he has held exhibitions and participated in number of events related to arts and crafts in both Japan and abroad.

From 2008, the blue mug cups and guinomi cups (small cups used for drinking sake) are sold at and became the official university merchandise of the local university. In December 2010, submitted his works to “HAND MADE IN JAPAN AWARD” and was exhibited at a gallery in Düsseldorf, Germany, where his work won the second prize. In May 2011, he exhibited his work at Gallery DEN in Berlin, Germany, an event organized by “HANDMADE IN JAPAN EXHIBITION”, held on behalf of the 150th anniversary of Japan-Germany Relationships.

He is participating in various exhibitions and events to share his works. Although his handmade works may take some weeks to acquire, the unique concept of constellation and the beautiful blue colored cup attracts many of his fans.
