About Okukuji Tea

Okukuji Tea (奥久慈茶) is produced in one of Japan's northernmost tea-growing regions, centered around Daigo Town in northern Ibaraki Prefecture.

Tea cultivation in the area is said to date back more than 400 years, when tea seeds were brought from Uji, Kyoto and planted in the mountainous landscapes of northern Ibaraki. Over generations, local tea farmers developed cultivation and processing techniques suited to the region's unique climate.

The area's cold winters, abundant rainfall, and significant temperature differences between day and night create ideal conditions for producing flavorful tea. The slower growth of the tea leaves allows sweetness, umami, and aroma to develop gradually, resulting in teas known for their bright liquor, smooth texture, and refreshing finish.
