Japanese Black Sesame Latte with Okinawan Cinnamon

black sesame latte with okinawa cinnamon by yunomi.life

Sachiko Murata |

Warm up on a chilly autumn day with this comforting Japanese-inspired latte. Rich, nutty black sesame blends with creamy milk and a hint of fragrant Okinawan cinnamon, known as Karaki. Finished with a delicate dusting of golden turmeric, its deep, dark color makes it a cosy seasonal treat, perfect for autumn and Halloween.

About the Ingredients

Black sesame

For this recipe, we use this powder, which brings a rich, nutty sesame flavor to this comforting autumn drink. If you've tried our previous recipe, A Japanese Halloween Dessert: Hojicha & Black Sesame Mousse, you may remember how beautifully black sesame pairs with the roasted notes of hojicha. This time, we're using black sesame powder in a different way: blended with warm milk to create a smooth, creamy latte.

Karaki

Known in Okinawan as Karaki or Karagi, Okinawan cinnamon is a distinctive spice associated with the northern part of Okinawa Island. Traditionally, its bark and roots have been used as spices, while its aromatic leaves are also enjoyed in cooking. For this recipe, we use Karaki leaf powder to add a gentle, fragrant warmth that complements the rich, nutty flavour of black sesame. If Karaki is difficult to find, a small pinch of regular cinnamon powder makes an easy substitute.

Japanese Black Sesame Latte Recipe

Serves: 1

Ingredients

  • 15 g(about 2½ tbsp) Black Sesame Latte Powder
  • 150 ml milk (dairy or your favourite plant-based milk)
  • A small pinch of Karaki Powder, plus a little extra for garnish
  • A tiny pinch of ground turmeric, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Add the powders: Add the black sesame powder and Karaki powder to a mug
  2. Warm the milk: Heat the milk in a saucepan or microwave until hot.
  3. Make the latte: Pour a little warm milk into the mug and stir until smooth. Add the remaining milk and stir well. For a light fluffy finish, use a milk frother to blend and froth the latte.
  4. Garnish and serve: Sprinkle with a little turmeric and Karaki powder. Enjoy warm!

Note: Use your favorite milk. Whole milk creates a rich, creamy texture, while oat milk adds a gentle sweetness and soy milk offers a more earthy flavor.

Enjoy a cosy cup of this nutty black sesame latte on a chilly autumn day!
