Saemidori - Japanese Tea Cultivar

(27 products)

The saemidori tea cultivar was registered in 1990 and is a cross between Yabukita and Asatsuyu. It has become known for its brilliant, bright green color and natural sweetness, and has become the dominant cultivar for the top gyokuro growers in Japan (as evidenced by its dominance among award winning gyokuro). It has more sweetness than Yabukita, but can be hard to grow, so tends to fetch a premium.

This cultivar is a favorite of ours, so we tend do tend to list it if offered by a farm.

Note that sweetness is relative and the actual flavor depends growing conditions: shaded tea becomes sweet while unshaded tea is not sweet (just relatively sweeter than yabukita).
