Introduction
The Otsuchi Recovery Sashiko Project provides not only the material and financial support to the people of Otsuchi, one of the coastal towns in Iwate that was devastated by the Tsunami, but also practical support by creating jobs for residents who have lost so much.
Five volunteers started this project and picked Sashiko as the tool to create an industry. “Sashiko” is a kind of stitching (see the wikipedia explanation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sashiko_stitching traditionally used to reinforce points of wear, or to repair worn places or tears with patches.
