Product Info
Unlike mass-produced teapots that use glossy chemical glazes, this Kyusu features a unique, traditional technique known in Tokoname as "Chara."
- What is Chara? It is a specialized clay slip—somewhere between raw earth and a glaze—made from the exact same mineral-rich red clay as the teapot itself.
- The Benefit: It acts as a natural protective coating, giving the surface a beautifully smooth, satin-like luster without sealing the clay entirely.
Because it is not coated in glass-like glaze, the porous red clay remains "alive." The rich iron content in the Shudei clay chemically reacts with the tannins in green tea, mellowing the bitterness and bringing out a sweeter, rounder, and more balanced flavor.
The more you use this Kyusu, the more it absorbs the natural oils of the tea. Over time, the subtle sheen from the "Chara" coating will deepen into a rich, deep gloss unique to your hands. It is not just a tool, but a living piece of functional art that evolves with every brew.
