3rd generation tea farmer Ishizuka Sayaka has just taken over the cultivation of the family tea garden from her father in 2022 and is cultivating organically (though not certified)—no pesticides, no chemicals, no herbicides used.
\n
The tea garden (\"chabatake\" means \"tea field\") is situated deep in the valley above Okazaki City, formerly called the Nukata Village, and is where her grandparents lived. Their old, traditional farmhouse is being made into an event space where she invites locals to come and experience tea farming. \"Tsubame\" — Japanese for the bird \"swallow\" — are often found in raising their chicks in the farmhouse.
\n
Currently (2025) she is only harvests a few dozen kilograms, only a quarter of her garden, but we are helping her to expand her production by providing a guarantee of purchase.

About Chikumeido Shizuoka Tea
\n
Chikumeido Shizuoka Tea itself is one of Japan's oldest companies, established in 1781 at the beginning of the reign of the 11th Tokugawa Shogun, Ienari, by founder Nishimura Shoatsu Tadazane. The 7th tea master, Nishimura Eiji, who created this product, is also credited with popularizing the term \"hot water gyokuro\" - what we call today Kabusecha (Warakake series from Chikumeido).

The 7th Tea Master of Chikumeido Shizuoka Tea, Nishimura Eiji, nearly a century ago was one of the first tea purveyors to begin selling kabusecha. Then it was known as hot water gyokuro (netto gyokuro) and farmers covered their tea plants with straw (warakake) to shade the leaves. Today, Chikumeido continues the tradition with their warakake series.
\n
Tenmei - light of heaven - is the 4th highest grade in the Warakake series and is a blend that creates a perfect balance between umami savoriness and grassy bitternes.

Emi Nakagawa hails from Miyoshi Village in Tokushima and has been creating ceramics by hand since 2020 after studying Kiyomizu-Yaki production in Kyoto. Nakagawa Hirohisa – Bamboo Work Inspired by the Craft of Calligraphy and Nature
\n
Emi’s father Hirohisa Nakagawa lives in a quiet village nestled in the mountains of Tokushima, where the wind whispers and the river flows. For over 30 years, he has worked as a calligrapher. The delicate sensitivity and precision of the brush strokes have been a foundation of his work, and now, he is also focusing on bamboo crafts.
\n
The inspiration to start bamboo crafts came from a local project aimed at revitalizing fireflies in the river through environmental conservation. To protect the ecosystem, bamboo thinning was necessary. Rather than simply disposing of the bamboo, Hirohisa wanted to transform it into something new. This is how the bamboo craft creation began.
\n
Shaping, weaving, and assembling a single bamboo, he creates pieces that weave together the gifts of nature and the skillful hands, delivering works full of warmth.

Hiroki Matsumoto, the young farmer at Kaneroku Matsumoto Tea Garden is always challenging himself to create unique and extraordinary teas. His inspiration comes from the fact that many tea farmers around him in Shizuoka (perhaps, the best known prefecture for tea in Japan) are already making very good and high quality tea. While the focus of the generations before him was to sell cultivated tea to wholesalers, during his time as a tea farmer, Kaneroku Matsumoto Tea Garden began to make their own products, which allowed Matsumoto-san to directly interact with customers (i.e., the people who drink his tea!). These interactions shifted something in him as began thinking about creating his own style of tea, one which wasn’t limited by the labels placed as \"Shizuoka-cha\" or \"Shimada-cha\".
\n
The Japanese smoked black tea is just one of Matsumoto-san’s innovative teas. Matsumoto-san has been experimenting with other woods such as sakura (cherry blossom), apple, cedar, etc, it is definitely worthwhile to compare across his smoked teas! This innovative black tea has been smoked for 8 hours with the Japanese cedar wood from island of Yakushima off the southernmost coast of the main Japanese island. Even upon the opening of this smoked tea, one will experience quite a strong smoky impression. Like many of his smoked teas, this matsu wood smoked black tea provides a velvety sensation, calm but profound. If you are familiar with Chinese tea, it could be compared to the Chinese tea, lachsang souchong. A wondrous Japanese black tea which will take you by surprise!
\n
Please note that all aspects of the production at Kaneroku Matsumoto Tea Garden adhere to the environmental conservation cultivation method world renown as GIAHS (i.e., Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System). Therefore, tea bushes are cultivated in the traditional Japanese chagusaba method where grass is used as mulch to protect and flavor the tea leaves. Please note that no flavorings nor additives have been used.
