The Cultivar - Kirari 31

The Kirari 31 is a cultivar that is receiving increasing attention in recent years. It was derived from a cross of Sakimidori (the mother or pollen parent) and Saemidori (the father or pollen parent. Saemidori itself a cross between Yabukita and Asatsuyu cultivars). The cultivar was first produced in 1994 with traits such as disease and cold resistance, good growth, and tea quality in mind, and indeed has shown very good resistance against frost so has been recommended to farmers cultivating at higher elevations. In general, the quality of tea made from the Kirari 31 is greater than that of Yabukita and compares with the umami level and color of Saemidori. Ready for harvest in general 3-4 days earlier than Yabukita, it has an excellent color (as you may be able to tell from the photo) with a mild flavor that is similar to Saemidori quality.

Renowned tea master and farmer Uejima Noriyasu in the famous tea producing region of Wazuka Village, Kyoto Prefecture, has crafted this single cultivar (single estate & single field) sencha available only at the start of the year in spring. It is considered shincha, meaning \"new tea\", for a few months following harvest, and being sold on Yunomi.life while supplies last.
Noriyasu Uejima is a hard working and humble tea master. In the 90+ year old tea tasting competition held in Kyoto, he is the only winner to ever achieve a perfect score. Cultivating and processing some of Kyoto's finest teas, the Ritz Carlton Hotel of Kyoto features his teas in their line up for guests. He is the 5th generation master farmer carrying on a tradition that dates back to the mid-19th century when his ancestor started the Uejima family as a branch family of an even older main family. The farm also operates the Wazuka Village's Wazuka Cha Cafe.
