Master dyers at Kyoto-based Maeda Senko have created the Shikisai (“colors of the seasons”) series of tenugui hand cloths to express each month of the year.
May features the carp streamers, called Koinobori, which are flown from flagpoles throughout Japan in May by parents as a symbol of their wish for their children to grow up healthy and strong (like carps).
