Farm Introduction

According to Hiroki Murakami, who will become the farm's 4th generation master, the family doesn't know exactly when they started farming tea, though his great-grandfather was the one who built their first processing factory in the late 19th century.

Based in the Yoshiwara district, a mountainous region famous for its sea of clouds within the municipality of Shizuoka City, the family produces about 2 tons of tea altogether per year (first and second flushes).

Their leaves are mostly processed as a near-fukamushi (deep steamed), a steaming technique that creates a tea that has fukashimicha's deep, opaque green color and sweetness, but while also retaining much of the leaf's shape.
A single cultivar, Yutaka Midori from Seikoen Tea Factory. The tea leaves were grown in Kagoshima Prefecture (southern Japan) are deep steamed to make fukamushicha, a form of sencha where the leaves are broken up into small piece and that creates a deep opaque green liquor. Refined by Matsuki-san at his factory in Niigata Prefecture (northern Japan), the base grade of this lot forms a tea that is wonderful for your daily cup.

A shincha coming from Kurihara Tea Farm (Yame, Fukuoka prefecture); specialists in gyokuro tea leaf cultivation and processing, this Hachijyuhachiya shincha (literally, “88th night new tea”) is a tea that was poetically harvested on the 88th day from the start of spring according to the old lunar calendar. Picked on May 1st this year, drinking this tea is said to bring you good fortune and health throughout the year ahead. Indeed, this shincha comes from the transition from spring to summer, which in Japan is regarded as an ideal and fortuitous time to harvest tea and start the planting of rice. Tips for a Pleasant Tea Drinking Experience

Pour boiling water into a teacup or cup, leave it for about 2 minutes to cool around 70-80° C, and then transfer it to a kyusu (Japanese tea pot). Steep for 60 to 90 seconds and it is ready to drink! Pour up to the last drop as the last drops are where the umami resides.

From the 2nd steep, pour the hot water at a higher temperature than the 1st steep and steep for a shorter duration.

About the cultivar: Yutaka Midori (ゆたかみどり) means abundant green in Japanese. This cultivar ranks second after the Yabukita cultivar with respect to cultivation area and popularity in Japan. Delicious fukamushicha, or deep-steamed tea, from the Village of Ei in Kagoshima Prefecture. Together with the Villages of Chiran and Kawabe, the entire region is known as the Chiran region producing world famous Chirancha (Tea from Chiran). The first flush tends to be characterised by an excellent balance between delicate flavor and reasonable pricing, a gem hiding quietly waiting to be discovered.

About the cultivar: Yutaka Midori (ゆたかみどり) means abundant green in Japanese. It is a cultivar that is mostly found in Kagoshima prefecture (30% cultivated area) as it is a cultivar that is suitable for warm weather. This cultivar ranks second after the Yabukita cultivar with respect to cultivation area and popularity in Japan. While producers often mix the Yutaka Midori with other cultivars, a single cultivar tea will give a deep green color with a balanced astringency and sweetness and pleasant fragrance.

Yamane-en is a family-operated tea shop based near Sugamo Station on the Yamanote Loop Line in Tokyo and run by tea master Michio Shiobara. 3rd generation tea farmer Hiroki Matsumoto manages some 30 fields in the Kiriyama region of the Makinohara plain in Shimada, Shizuoka. This tradition requires farmers to cultivate sasa grasses surrounding the tea fields, and use the grasses as fertilizer in the fields.

As we approach the 2025 harvest season, the spring tea from last year is close to a year old. With modern packaging, they have been sealed tightly for a year and aged - you should taste a more mellow flavor than freshly harvested leaf, but in most cases still quite delicious. The products contained here may be close to their best by dates if we procured them last April or May, so we will extend a Yunomi.life guarantee of quality for a "Yunomi.life guaranteed best by date" until Dec 2025 if the package remains unopened. If you open a 2024 tea before Dec 2025, and you feel it doesn't taste as it should, please contact us for a refund. Older tea is also nice to use for tea blending with other ingredients as well as roasting into hojicha.
