Evoking the colors of the rainbow with 7 different string colors, Niji è¹ is a chasen to brighten your day.
\n
The \"white\" bamboo ç½ç«¹ used for the whisk itself is henon bamboo (hachiku 淡竹) that has had its color removed through traditional, centuries-old techniques. A specific type of bamboo grown in the Kinki region of Japan (Nara, Kyoto, Osaka, Wakayama, etc) is harvested in the winter after 2-3 years of growth, boiled to remove oil in the plant, dried in the cold winter air, then aged for another 2-3 years. During this process the green color of the bamboo fades into the \"white\" color of bamboo.Â

Made in Takayama
\n
Japanese handmade bamboo whisk or chasen are made in Takayama, the historical home of matcha whisks with roots tracing back five centuries. About 90% of all tea whisks (chasen) in Japan are made in this area.
\n
Suikaen in Takayama traces its roots back to the 16th century and is one of a few studios preserving the tradition of whisk crafting. The head of the studio is its 25th generation master craftsman Tanimura Yasuburo.

When you first use...
\n
The Chasen is glued with the paper box with glue made from kneaded rice. To take out the Chasen from the box, please hold the handle and peel it off slowly. Next, use a wet cloth to wipe the bottom of the handle. Before you start using, please gently soak it in hot water to prevent the prongs from snapping off.
\n
Due to movement during transport, it is possible that the base may become unstuck to the box.
\n
Care & Precautions:
\n
\n
The tip of Chasen may break if it is pressed hardly against the bottom of tea bowl. Please use the Chasen gently so that it can last longer.
\n
Please refrain from using a dishwasher or dryer as sudden change in temperature and humidity may cause cracking.
\n
After use, please rinse it with water and dry it thoroughly before storing it.
\n
Please refrain from storing at places of high temperature, high humidity, extremely dry area and direct sunlight. Recommended humidity for storage: 45-60%\n

About the artist
\n
I am a native of New Mexico, but have lived in Japan since 1990. Although I developed an interest in pottery as a child from visiting ancient ruins and surrounding pueblos, I didn't start making pots until 2002 when I met veteran Karatsu potter Tsuruta Yoshihisa who mentored me in the Karatsu tradition.
\n
After an initial period of renting and borrowing kilns, I built Gotanbayashi studio in 2005 and installed a gas kiln. In 2008, I began showing work to the public, participating in shows, and conducting workshops. 2010 saw the construction of the Gotanbayashi anagama/noborigama hybrid wood kiln next to the existing studio, and this is the kiln in which most of the work is fired today.
\n
Much of the work is teaware for the Japanese tea ceremony, but I also make Japanese and western style tableware, ware for drinking sake, sculptural work, and collaborative pieces with artists from other mediums.

“CHERRY BARK CRAFTWORK”: A TWO-HUNDRED YEAR OLD TRADITION
\n
Kabazaiku was initiated by samurai warriors as a supplementary work task approximately 220 years ago during the Temmei Era. This craftsmanship was adopted by the townspeople of Kakunodate (Akita Prefecture), and continues to be perfected in an environment rich in culture. Natural cherry bark breathes. It handles moisture well. Its tough surface makes Kabazaiku craft-ware suitable for everyday use. An intricate relationship exists between cherry bark, wisdom, and the devotion of skilled craftsmen that brings about a special harmony found in unique and beautiful kabazaiku products.

Karatsuyaki Tradition
\n
Karatsuyaki, or Karatsu Ware (Wikipedia entry), as a living tradition encompasses an enormous range of work, representative of both Japanese and Korean culture. Considered a traditional Japanese handicraft, it is known for its simple, sturdy, earthy style. Using clay rich in iron, works done in this style may be unglazed or decorated with an iron-based glaze creating the earthy, natural feel.

Utilizing kabazaiku (sakura wood bark craft) techniques and bark from various different woods, studio Fujiki Denshiro worked with award winning designer Kaichiro Yamada to create the sophisticated Obizutsu series of tea canisters. The series features the sakura bark as an \"obi\" or kimono sash framed by polished wood of different types.

About Kabazaiku
\n

\n\n
Fujiki Denshiro was established in 1851 as a kabazaiku wholesaler and transformed into the premier kabazaiku manufacturing studio by the late 6th generation owner Koichi Fujiki.

About Kabazaiku
\n

About Oiso Studio
\n
Located in the seaside town of Oiso, Kanagawa Prefecture, Toshiyuki Komeya began his studio in 2006. Specializing in ceramics and porcelain during his high school years in Gifu Prefecture (known for the Minoyaki ceramics tradition), Komeya-san has made a name for himself utilizing the blue sky and ocean of the town of Oiso as his artistic theme.
\n

“Tableware created through time and human hands.”
\n
Back in the middle of nineteenth century in Ori Inatsu cho, Mizunami-city in Gifu prefecture, the ceramic ware called “Risen-yaki” was created and it was the first challenge in the country to try ceramics painting by using copper plate.
\n
Miyama was born in this place in 1977, inheriting the art and spirit developed in this area. Our tableware is created by the technique called “casting”, which forms porcelain with plaster mold. This technique involves many people’s skill in creating tableware.
\n
“Beautifully finished material.”
\n
Finishing material beautifully. For white porcelain, it is important to draw its original whiteness, which will lead us to improve its quality as well. Miyama’s white porcelain is created by firing porcelain clay which is rich in glass component at 1340 degrees. By firing in a high-temperature oven, the clay and glaze get harmonized, vitrified and create translucent luster on its surface, and it becomes an easy-to-wash and stain-resistant material at the same time. It will grow to be more functional and aesthetically pleasing through this process. Tableware with the beauty of utility.

Suikaen in Takayama traces its roots back to the 16th century and is one of a few studios preserving the tradition of whisk crafting. The head of the studio is its 25th generation master craftsman Tanimura Yasuburo.

Dimensions:
\n
Width (handle): 1.8 cm Height: 11.5 cm *All measurements are approximate
\n
\n
The natural drying process may cause vertical cracks in the handle, however, please enjoy the change in expression and texture as part of the natural bamboo's original taste.
With an extra fine strainer perfect for fukamushicha (deep steamed tea), this traditionally crimson (朱色 shu-iro) yokode kyusu (side handed tea pot) is made for left-handed tea enthusiasts.

The Imamura family began making pottery in the current Mikawachiyama, Sasebo City, with Koseki and his family who came to Japan at the invitation of Prince Matsuura when he played the role of Hideyoshi Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the third year of Keicho (1598). In the 18th year of Kan'ei (1641), Sannosuke II was appointed as a lord and deputy officer of the Hirado Domain, and Yajibei III was named \"Nyosaru\" by Prince Matsuura because he was dexterous like a monkey. In 1664, Hirado was supplied by research on white porcelain production using Amakusa pottery stone and white porcelain production presented by the Shogunate. Shoemon 4th, Zenemon 5th, Riemon 6th, Katsuji 7th, Ritaro Yatsushiro, Kotaro 9th continued as a kiln, and with the abolition of the kiln by the abolition of the feudal clan, Toshisaku 10th, 11th Fusataro Yatsushiro started trading in the Netherlands and developed new products such as coffee bowls while preserving traditional techniques. In 1963, the 12th generation Kao moved the kiln to Arita-cho to expand the kiln, and produced mainly tea utensils. Hiroshi 13th generation exhibited at the Nitten, Contemporary Crafts Frankfurt, British Museum, etc. Currently, Kenichi Imamura is the 14th generation master craftsman at Touestugama.

Evoking the colors of the rainbow with 7 different string colors, Niji 虹 is a chasen to brighten your day.
The "white" bamboo 白竹 used for the whisk itself is henon bamboo (hachiku 淡竹) that has had its color removed through traditional, centuries-old techniques. During this process the green color of the bamboo fades into the "white" color of bamboo.
Made in Takayama
Japanese handmade bamboo whisk or chasen are made in Takayama, the historical home of matcha whisks with roots tracing back five centuries. About 90% of all tea whisks (chasen) in Japan are made in this area.
Suikaen in Takayama traces its roots back to the 16th century and is one of a few studios preserving the tradition of whisk crafting. The head of the studio is its 25th generation master craftsman Tanimura Yasuburo.
Product info
Dimensions:
Width (handle): 1.8 cm Height: 11.5 cm *All measurements are approximate
When you first use...
Due to movement during transport, it is possible that the base may become unstuck to the box.
Care & Precautions:
The tip of Chasen may break if it is pressed hardly against the bottom of tea bowl. Please use the Chasen gently so that it can last longer.
Please refrain from using a dishwasher or dryer as sudden change in temperature and humidity may cause cracking.
After use, please rinse it with water and dry it thoroughly before storing it.
Please refrain from storing at places of high temperature, high humidity, extremely dry area and direct sunlight.Recommended humidity for storage: 45-60%
The natural drying process may cause vertical cracks in the handle, however, please enjoy the change in expression and texture as part of the natural bamboo's original taste.
