This is a deep steamed green tea, or fukamushisencha, from Tanegashima Island, harvested extra early for young sweet tea leaves. Tanegashima Island (種子島), called “surfer’s paradise” by the locals, is a subtropical island located off the coast of famous tea producing, Kagoshima prefecture. Tanegashima island is part of the Oosumi islands (located close to the famous Yakushima island), these Southern islands are well known for producing the earliest harvest of shincha in Japan! The shimamidori cultivar is quite a rare cultivar which was selected from Yabukita seedlings but has yet to be officially registered as a cultivar.
