Description

If you are attempting to learn about the differences between cultivars and to become more familiar with Japanese tea cultivars, it is best to compare teas from the same farmer so to eliminate the differences that cultivation practices and region might create in the tea.

Here are five different cultivars from the well-known and respected tea farmer, Uejima-san in Wazuka, Kyoto Prefecture. Below is a short description about each of the 5 different cultivars. The rest is left for you to discover yourself... Please enjoy the tea tasting process!

  • Gokou: An unregistered tea cultivar from Kyoto Prefecture which is mainly used to make gyokuro or tencha, this is a rare find in sencha form.
  • Saemidori: A cultivar which represents "clear green", a successful hybrid between the Yabukita and Asatsuyu. The Saemidori cultivar is becoming more familiar and liked by Japanese tea lovers.
  • Saeakari: Registered rather more recently in 2011, saeakari means "radiant/clear brightness" in Japanese. It can be characterised with its chestnut aroma and high umami and faires well as a gyokuro or kabusecha.
  • Sakimidori: A cultivar characterised by its vibrant green color, this cultivar is not very common to come across. It has a nice equilibrium of sweet and umami and was developed in Miyazaki prefecture in 1997.
  • Tsuyuhikari: Developed in Shizuoka Prefecture , this cultivar is characterised with its rich umami taste, fresh aroma, and is delicately floral.
